เหตุการณ์นี้เกิดขึ้นเมื่อวันอังคาร (9 ม.ค.) ที่สถานีโทรทัศน์ทีซี (TC) ในเมืองกัวยากิว (Guayaquil) ทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของประเทศเอกาวาดอร์
กลุ่มชายสวมหมวก หน้ากาก และพกอาวุธปืน บุกเข้าไปยังสถานีโทรทัศน์แห่งนี้ ขณะกำลังออกอากาศสด พร้อมบังคับให้พนักงานนอนราบกับพื้น ก่อนที่สัญญาณถ่ายทอดสดจะถูกตัดขาดไป
สำนักข่าวเอเอฟพีรายงานว่า ได้ยินเสียงผู้หญิงคนหนึ่งร้องว่า “อย่ายิง ขอร้องอย่ายิง” ขณะเดียวกันก็ได้ยินเสียงคนกรีดร้องด้วยความเจ็บปวด
“ได้โปรด พวกเขาเข้ามาเพื่อฆ่าพวกเรา” พนักงานทีซี กล่าวกับเอเอฟพีผ่านข้อความวอตส์แอปป์ “พระเจ้า อย่าปล่อยให้เรื่องนี้เกิดขึ้นเลย คนร้ายกำลังออนแอร์อยู่”
